BRIDGING CULTURAL EMPLOYMENT GAP

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh with a Master’s of Science in Education and Professional Counseling. Maiyoua has been active within the community for organizing educational workshops and programs, and for five years has helped plan the Annual Hmong Educational Conference hosted by the Appleton Area School District. She has also volunteered to serve on a committee to assist new refugees settle productively into the Fox Cities. She was also a core planning committee member for the 2009 Hmong National Development Conference in Appleton. “When we first arrived here in the United States, we all had to learn our ABCs”, says Maiyoua, President of ABC Staffing. “Our staffing agency is a reminder that ordinary people with limited English skills can become educated and outstanding citizens within our communities. They just need to be given the opportunity to find stable employment and provide for their families. These workers may not end up being lawyers, doctors, and business owners; but their children may very well be. I look at my own journey from a refugee camp in Thailand to being a business owner and entrepreneur in the city of Appleton. My hope is to give someone the same opportunity my family was given.”
